Weather held out perfectly, a little overcast and cool, just a small breeze. Ride was going great on the lead up to the first climb, Calaveras..

Then I had the misfortune of scoring a double flat right before the climb starts. Up till this point I'd been fortunate enough to not flat on my road bike, so of course I only have 1 tube on hand. Busted out the patch kit and got myself back on the road without to much incident. SAG dropped by just as I was wrapping up so I was able to get my tires back to regulation pressure without spending the rest of the day on my hand pump.. Things to do, look into CO2..

With one patched tube, and the wall climb ahead of me i took it pretty cautiously, paranoid that I was going to either flat again, or find out I had a slow leak or something lame. The 'wall' section of calaveras passed without incident, and I coasted down the other side to the rest stop, where I managed to score a new tube from the mechanic station. At least I have some outs now if my streak of poor luck continues.

The rest of the route was over mostly familiar territory, Sunol, across to Foothill, then over the Dublin grade, and back up Palomeras, which is pretty much my nemesis hill. There is a small wall right at the summit, and it definitely got the better of me today coming at the 54 mile mark.. Usually when I'm riding I tackle it in the early 20's so it's not quite as bad..

The patch ended up holding well, and I put the first metric century of the season to bed. Nice ride, would have been perfect sans flat delays..

Now to hit the LBS and see about some Armadillos ;)

nice Will! Flats suck, Armadillos are good! Well, I can't really speak from experience since I've only been riding on them for a couple of weeks. But I just ride straight through glass without worrying.

Oh, and CO2? *awesome* Still good to have a mini pump (or ride with someone that has one) on hand so you can inflate the tube a little bit before putting it back in. But inflating the tire in seconds is pure joy.

And i figure if they live up to the promise i won't need to worry about CO2! :P
