Another early night for recovery had me awake far too early in the morning. The urge to swim was overwhelming, and rather than toss and turn, I headed to Dishman Community Center.
I skipped the scheduled routine with the thinking that I needed to take it easy. Also, the scheduled routine called for 1500 yds of drafting, which requires one or more partners whom I wouldn't have today. As I previously mentioned, drafting is a bit on the easy side/cheating (you say "potayto", I say "potahto") so 1500 yds of drafting might be the equivalent of 300 yds of actual swimming.
In trying to avoid using a kick, I really focused on the trajectory of my hands through the water and my head position. I can hear the water go by my ears differently depending on my form and I try to remember the sound on my faster/less effort laps. The opportunity to practice flip turns presented itself and late in the series of 200 yd sets, I actually had a 3:01 without much additional work. Without flip turns I'm gasping to make 3:15. I concentrated on pushing off using my quadriceps as oppsed to my calves since my ankles and achilles tendons are still a bit angry with me. Alas, too bad the triathlon doesn't have walls to push off of :)
