midnight ascent and descent on Malahat Drive. Stopped briefly in Duncan to nap and refuel on caffeine (running on about 6 hours of sleep in the last 69 hours at this point) plus also multiple mechanical issues with Mark's bike. He wound up having fender rub problems at the top of Malahat and got a flat around 3 miles before the finish.

All the same, we finished within regulation, which is all one can ask for.

You're amazing. Although I'm doing a 100k brevet in August, I don't ever see an accomplishment like yours in my future. Kudos.

Oh wow, you're totally my hero. What's next?

spokenword says,

thanks, everyone!

my immediate plans are to take it easy for a bit, and just limit my riding to commutes and trips around town. There are still bits of me (knee, back, right arm) that need to recover from 30+ hours of riding with an improperly adjusted saddle; and I want to hold off on anything significant until then.

the rest of the summer, there are plans to do stuff (gasp!) off the bike, like hike in the White Mountains and Vermont and rock climb. There's a cross-state 350k that's sort of the Boston club's annual 'end of season' ride, and there's the ever notorious D2R2, which I've DNF'ed twice now. Here's to hoping that third time's the charm.

further afield, it's the girl's turn to decide on vacation for next year and she's talking about European bike touring. We'll see on that as well.

oh, and I should say that as you may have gathered from my past ride times, physically, I'm just your average everyday guy with a 9-5 job. It wasn't that long ago that I went from riding around town to doing my first charity century, and it was only a couple of years afterwards that I did my first bike tour, and it was only a year later that I rode in my first 200k brevet (and then wound up going all the way to a 600k). So, rides like this are attainable to the average cyclist who wants to put in the time and effort. It's just, you know, a lot of time and a lot of effort.

It's hard to say anything that hasn't been said. Simply amazing. I am in awe and inspired.
