errand running around town to replenish toiletries and reading material before flying out to Hawaii again. No bike to be brought on this trip, unfortunately. It's been nice to have been riding again.

AM Commute (Mass Ave)huh ... I guess they've finally finished building out that intersection outside Central Square ... oh joy, yet another red light on a commute route.

Stopped by a friend's house near Union Square for Rosh Hashanah. Swapped tales of travelling in one of those evening where one person starts of with, "When I was in Tanzania...", which leads to "That reminds me of this time in Morocco ...", which was followed with "Oh yeah, when I was travelling through Costa Rica ... ", etc.
Good times.

PM Commute (Bway + Concord)chilly ride home. didn't want to stop for a thing just to give the cold less of a chance of catching me.

AM Commute (Broadway)mmm ... wool weather, how much I have missed thee.

PM (Cambridge St)nice, chilly ride home. need to remember to break out the wool again. Amazingly, wound up riding home and seeing the solo tandem riding guy (http://www.weendure.com/user/spokenword/activit...). We wound up chatting and exchanging names; turns out he lives a couple of blocks on top of the hill. That was neat.

oof... I guess there goes the theory that a few weeks of high altitude mountaineering is a sufficient substitute for a month of bike commuting. Sinus infection recovery notwithstanding, I should not have been winded as I was on the climb over the Hancock.
Ah well, back to rebuilding. At least the hand and knee seems to have recovered from the accident.

short ride to Harris for a replacement helmet, bar tape and cycling gloves; then to Whole Foods for cookout ingredients and then over to Arlington for a friend's Labor Day weekend gathering.
Knee felt stiff at the outset, but loosened up as I kept going. Left hand still felt sore and tender; and wasn't up for much braking. Obviously pushing it to be back; need to take it easy and stay off the bike so that I don't reinjure myself for Kilimanjaro.
But, still, yay for being back on the bike again.

Oh, Deerfield ... you are fated to be my white whale.
On deck for a squeaker of a finish, coming in just before cut off, I had already, by then, endured 70 miles of hellacious sandy and dirt descents, 27% climbs, and mile long hill summits. I was tired but elated, having a great afternoon on my bike ... until my front wheel hit a deep rut at 25 mph and my bike stopped while I kept going; flying into a fire road and having my flesh scoured by gravel and dust.
Full crash story here: (http://cris.livejournal.com/184116.html).
Still recuperating five days later. The road burn is healing, I can make a fist with my left hand now and my left knee can take steps two at a time in short bursts. I hope to be back on my bike after a few more days ... two more weeks until I'm off to Africa and away from the bike for the rest of September ... need to make sure there are no hard feelings between us before I leave.
