Did a 2 hour EM ride and 3 sets of 3 Power Intervals @ 2 minutes on and 2 minutes off.

It was quite cold - the temp was 35 when I left and the windchill was 28. The sun was out and it helped tremendously.

The Power Intervals were tough as always. I seem to be getting better at them, so hopefully it's because they are working...

I found this cool "dump" from the Polar software. It's just raw data, but it appeals to the "detail oriented geek" in me.

This was a ride of will power. I had 3.5 hours on the calendar today and when I awoke and saw the weather it instantly became a game of mental gymnastics.

It was raining, and 38 degrees and it looked to be more of the same the rest of the day. So, I suited up, put on all my rain gear, got the rain bike down and left.

All of my usual riding pals bailed, so I was on my own.

It wasn't horrible, just naggingly uncomfortable. I was dressed well and the only problem I had was with my shoe covers. I grabbed the wrong ones - the ones that are not waterproof - and I paid for it. My feet were soaked within an hour.

The wind was the worst part - a steady 20 mph wind from the east - and so I decided to head straight north as far as a could and then straight south. Where I had to go east and west, I chose roads with tree coverage.

II ended up getting home 4 hours later, soaking wet, cold and hungry. I downed a recovery drink and got a hot shower and some hot soup and feel remarkably well.

This was one cold, windy, long, tough solo ride. All my riding partners wimped out because it was "too windy and cold"...weiners.

Anyway, it was mentally challenging, but I like rides like this occaisionally in a twisted sort of way.

Basically I headed into a 20mph crosswind for the first hour. Then I turned and went into some shelter, but climbed 5 really short and steep hills. Then I rode another hour directly into the 20 mph headwind, which I just similuated climbing by using a bigger gear and a lower cadence. Finally, for the last 45 miinutes I rode like the wind...with the wind. I ran out of gears. 53x12 at 95+ rpm and 170 bpm. Fun stuff.

Doug and I had planned to do 3 hours in the hills of southern Indiana today, but the temps were just too cold for climbing at 7am. The temps were 22 and the windchill was 14. We opted instead to wait until noon and do a 3-4 hour ride in the 25mph winds after the temps had warmed up about 10 degrees. It was still a cold ass day and though I was dressed well, I think I was a bit overdressed because I felt wet about halfway into the ride.

We headed north directly into the wind for 20 mile and then headed west and south with cross winds before we headed east with a tail wind. We ended up do a big loop around NW Hamilton county and then headed back to Dougs where I turned around an headed back into the wind to get home.

All in all, it felt like I had climbed mountains all day, so I didn't really miss Mooresville. We'll try again in a couple of weeks.

Side note: I did a "big gear" sprint today and went over 1000 watts for the first time since using a power meter.

Did an EM ride with SS intervals. Did the first one into the wind heading to Sheridan. The second one I did with the wind and was MUCH faster. The third and fourth were into a crosswind. I feel like these and the TT intervals are helping me TREMENDOUSLY. When it's time to go fast, I can go faster at less HR cost than I used to be able to.

I can't wait to see what it's like in another month once I get more of this plus PowerIntervals under my belt.
