This was my second attempt to bike to Pacific Ocean. First one was done in last October via Hwy9. This time I took the route through Lexington Reservoir. Maximum altitude of this route was only about 1600feet. It was a lot easier than the route via Hwy9. Drawback was the loose gravel on the trail from Los Gatos downtown to Lexington Reservoir. It really made the bike dusty. I had to walk for the steep hill section.
Old Santa Cruz Rd from reservoir to the summit was mostly in the redwood forest. It was nice and cool. It was not very steep. I felt like 5 to 6% grade. Traffic was light too.
There was considerable traffic on Summit and San Jose Soquel Rd. Otherwise it was not too steep and easy to ride. After taking San Jose Soquel Rd for couple of miles down from Summit, I started feeling cold wind from Pacific Ocean. Santa Cruz area was clearly cooler than the south bay.
However it was still hot overall, especially on the return trip. I emptied two bottles in the half way. I was thinking about chilled diet coke for rest of the route. As soon as I got home I emptied diet coke and seven up almost instantly.
