Harlow-Sheldon-Monroe Loop- Distance 4.50 miles

After 9 days of virtually no physical activity (to rest my angry back muscles) I got out of bed and ran this morning. The good news is that I could run, and after a short period my back muscles relaxed to the point where they did not affect my stride. The bad news is that this is not the kind of taper I intended for the Eugene Marathon on April 29th. I feel like I've lost significant running economy. I will endeavor to treat my back well but ramp up my training as hard as I can for the next 2 weeks, watch what I eat and regain where I was prior to being sidelined. This will effectively dimiinish my taper, but near as I can tell from this warm-up today, it is what I must do to get back and be able to meet my goal on the 29th (sub 3:35). It was great to get out and run. 38F, nearly full moon, clear skies.

Erik, it is kind of a "burst" instead of a taper!! You've got a tremendous base of miles under you for the past year - my thinking is that you will catch back up in a week and then be fine. It isn't perfect but you know, as I read, the whole training concept is so dynamic, this might be the beginning of a new trend - 5 days in a prone position during week 4 before the race, then get up and run like a son of a gun, then rest for a couple of days then race. If you will just write a book about it and put a bunch of initials after your name, people will start to pattern their training programs called the "Espete One Plan".
