Nice day for a ride, my knee was feeling pretty good, and overall I was too. Until the last 7 miles or so. We hit the last set of rollers and climbing one out of the saddle I felt my leg tighten up. I thought I just strained it a bit, so I continuned riding, and just avoided climbing out of the saddle. About a mile later it tightened up completely and I had to pull over and sit down, apparently I didn't drink enough and my legs were cramping up in a bad way. Had to stop 3 or 4 times in the last 6 miles to wait out the cramps/stretch my legs out.
Oh well, that's the kind of difficulty I'll take, at least I know how to fix it next time!

Good job! Cramps suck. On STP we'll have to remind each other to drink water! 1 bottle per hour!
Gotta hate the cramping..
How salty is your diet? Do you ever go for salty snacks at rest stops, or drink water vs electrolytes etc..
Not always the source of cramping, but can be one contributing factor.
I am learning for myself, that my absorption rate for fluids may vary with the type of sports drink used.
See my activity post from yesterday (06/17/06) for an account of my cramping woes on a 100 mile ride...
There is also some good info in the nutrition columns of VeloNews online...I think the columnist is Monique (something or other).
She claims that the sweat rate is anywhere from 60 to 75 ounces per hour, and the maximum absorption rate is about 30 -40. It's a losing proposition no matter what.
An IV in my camelback doesn't sound like a bad idea....
Gman
Oh no! Don't say the word "IV" to defeated! He'll be in therapy at the mere mention of the idea.
Will: I actually made a point of grabbing some salty food at the last rest stop yesterday. I had a couple of handfuls of pretzels and tortilla chips. I also drank half a bottle of gatorade then (drank the second half when my legs started cramping up).
Gman: Yeah, I read your entry yesterday and thought, "at least it's not just me today!" I'm going to just make a concious effort to drink at least one bottle per hour and I should be ok. I've ridden 50+ miles plenty of times without cramping up, yesterday was just a mistake on my part. I just was underhydrated in general, didn't really drink that much before hand, and didn't drink nearly enough during.
