Event: NYRR/Mets Run to Home Plate

Right royal cock-up today in terms of reading event details correctly. Got up at the butt crack of dawn to give myself ample enough time to get on the 7 train to go out to Shea in Queens for the 8.30 start. I was told that it would take me an hour because the 7 runs local on the weekends.

I get out there and seriously, I wouldn't have been surprised if a tumbleweed had rolled lazily across the road in front of me. There was nary a soul out there. People setting up the event tent and baggage area. Weird. Then I heard that the KIDS races started at 8.30 and the 5K was at 10am. 10am in this frickin' heat!

So I bummed around getting burnt while I waited.

The race itself was interesting in that it wasn't on the normal Central Park course, so I didn't know what was coming up next. It was super hot of course, and as we ran past the giant globe (the Unisphere) in Queens there, you could feel the heat coming off the pavement and slapping you on each cheek for good measure.

I felt surprisingly good for most of the run, though the last stretch on the dirt track inside Shea - which should have been the glory part of it - was so hot I thought I was going to pass out. Such a bunch up of people at the end too, so the heat couldn't escape and there wasn't any shade.

The only food at the end was stupid Subway sandwiches. I probably wouldn't say they were stupid if the one I got hadn't been at the very bottom of the box and was as flat as a pancake and soggy as shit. I threw it away. I hadn't eaten at all - apart from one Gu. Not good news.

Got a Mets towel. Woo hoo!
