unsolicited/contrarian advice: remember Kelly W. is younger. You have to run your race and you have to train the way that works for you. Run with discipline. Days off should be scheduled not taken when tired or hurting (by then it's too late), Pencil in days off just as you pencil in speed work or long runs. Run with faith. Your times are in fact fast enuff to predict success at Bizz Johnson. Taper down (seriously not modestly) for 2 weeks prior to a important PR attempt. Trust the taper it will not destroy your speed or endurance. Run for pleasure. Leave the watch at home on occasion- what does it matter. Some of your recent postings suggest the frustration that presages burnout. Enjoy the scenery and your running buddies. When it ain't workin' don't just try harder, change the pattern. Good plan to take a running vacation this Fall, i plan to do the same. mile repeats are twice as hard as 800 repeats he says (hehe) with disarming disingenuity
"Make your last thought before the start of a marathon: 'If I'm not worried that I'm running too slow in the first half, then I'm probably running too fast."
"Good things come slow-especially in distance running."
John, thanks for the notes and words. I do think you are correct in several of your observations (if not all of them) - I am definitely getting ready for at least a month off of "scheduled" runs.
Discipline is a tough thing - too much work, too little work - ah, visions and memories of youth haunt me - it always seemed as though I didn't work hard enough to meet the expectation of coaches etc. (I now realize that most of them were infidels to begin with but my soul still carries their message.) Ah well...
Tomorrow should be a fun little race/run - just signed up for a 15K to run with Erik and Brad. I've never run this length on roads before so it should be interesting and a treat. Then I'm heading over to the beach house. I will try to call. I'd be up for a little jaunt on Sunday or Monday if you're interested. 541-556-2823
