Met up with Brandon and Tom at 8:30 to do a 2 hour FM ride. I rode the fixed gear today after having swapped out the 16 for a 17 on the rear to make a 66.5" gear. I may go down to the 18 for a bit just to try it out. It may be too small, especially on the downhills.
I worked hard to keep my HR in the zone and was able to still ride the gear on the downhills and work that high rpm cadence without getting too far out of the zone. I took it really slow on the up hills and was able to stay in the zone most of the time.
Target HR Zone: (130-158) Foundation Miles

Almost everyone here rides a 42x17 fixed gear on the road. A 16 will be too hard unless you have a group pacing you and even then it will be tough in a headwind or on the climbs. The 18 will be too easy a gear and you'll be spun out too easily on the downhills. I use a flip-flop ub with a 17T fixed and 18T freewheel cog. If you get tired on a fixed gear ride the 18 will make life better and you can coast down the hills!
