Well, I hadn't ridden all week. I have had a nasty, persistent head cold that just won't leave after nearly 3 weeks. That, and I was away on business all week with no way to ride. They hotel's stationary bike was broken, so I was SOL.
Anyway, George called and wanted me to help him with a couple of his new pupils, so I obliged and met him up for the 8am breakfast ride.
It was a fairly uneventful ride, except that George insisted that I try out his Zipp 303 wheels. I wish I hadn't done that because now I want a pair. At first they didn't really feel that much different than my regular garden variety training wheels. It was only when I accelerated hard and also rolling above 23 mph that I noticed that they were in fact, quite fast wheels. My top end felt higher and acceleration was instantaneous.
A couple of us got away and were trading pulls into the wind...AT 27 MPH! Some of that had to be the wheels.
Anyway, I told George I'd come help him out over the next few weeks.
