Went out for a Sunday Morning ride with the boys. I figured that I'd just sit in and recover for the ride.

That went well for the first 40kms, and then we did some monster hills. I dropped off faster than a stone over Niagara Falls!
They waited up for me, and offered to cut the pace so that I could just sit in and continue for the Essa Loop. I declined, and turned off for home. Nigel also came out again this morning, and he felt equally cooked, so he came with me.

I couldn't get my heart rate over 140BPM for pretty much the entire ride, a sure sign my body wasn't ready to be riding yet after yesterday's Monster ride.

Shawn, Nigel, Jamie, Phil & Larry were ready to go at 8 as planned, Orrin was about 15mins late, so we were on the road by 8:20.

Mr. Astro,
Hey, thanks for the comment yesterday. Sounds like you are having a great season. How long have you been seriously training? I had a phenomenal year back in 01 - was averaging 300 mls/wk from May-October, and 2-2 1/2 hr rides would average 21mph. Not bad for my first year of riding. 2002, I was out sporadically. '03-'04 my bike sat in my garage, last yr i got out a bit, and now I weigh about 205 vs. 165 in 2001. Arghhh! Absolutely I agree with your statement about base mileage being key. I'm planning on doing basework only the rest of the summer & fall (for that matter til I'm back in fighting shape!), and worry about more power-specific workouts next year. I'm finding consistency to be the biggest obstacle right now. I'm riding by myself, which I kindof enjoy when I'm feeling good. Too often I used to ride with others but it would end up being a 16mph gab session. But on days when I don't feel like riding, it's easy to stay in when noone is going to hold me accountable. And until I start to ride 5-6 days consistently, I know my fitness level won't improve excessively.

Anyway, I should get back to work (blah!). Check in with me sometime, and thanks for the encouragement. You seem to be the residential biblical-Paul of this forum. Encouraging, exhorting, and who knows, maybe even rebuking if it's called for! Well, keep hittin the pave...talk to ya later.

hey man,

This is my second year of cycling, and my first year of really taking it seriously. Last year I began riding as my primary source of Transportation in Toronto. I finished the year with ~4200kms. I then got sick, and ended up being stuck virtually in bed from November until early March. I lost all the fitness I'd gained over the summer, and manged to put on 20lbs too!
I was regularly riding again by the start of April, and since then it's been a steady upwards progression of my abilities :)

I too do most of my riding alone, and there are certainly days when i don't feel i've got the motivation to get out there and ride, however I know that getting out and riding will only help make me feel better, and improve my emotional state, whereas sitting inside at the computer working will have the opposite effect. I do one large group ride/week, and try to get out with a buddy or two, a couple of times a week as well, but I don't have much trouble motivating myself to get out there. Just logging in here, and seeing who's ahead of me for the week tends to be enough ;)

Keep riding and having fun, the speed/endurance will come to you!
