things started really well, i was feeling great and our group was working well together. 5 BCC members including myself broke off the front @ the 3km mark. We opened up a huge gap, but around the 30km mark the group which started after us had caught our original group, and then us too.

We worked together for about 8kms, then we caught the next group up the road. This group had some more inexperienced riders in it, but they too tried to hold onto us. Somewhere around the 45km mark one of the weaker riders went down on the road after touching wheels with another rider. Unfortunately for me, he went down directly in front of me, as i was about to pass him on the left. I hit him, and tumbled down as well.
He stayed down, and seemed to be in some trouble. I was able to pick myself up and gather my water bottle and sunglasses and remount. The group we were in split, with some waiting, including several teammates. We worked together and slowly began putting a dent into the lead of the guys who didn't wait.

Sadly for me, I had a huge adrenaline boost after the crash, but with about 5kms to go, i ran out of adrenaline and the pain began to set in. I didn't have the mental strength to continue at maximun effort levels at this point. I told one of my teammates that i was hurting and wouldn't be able to finish with the group. He waited back with me and we dropped off about 50m from the group. I felt bad that he was waiting for me, when he likely could place well at the finish so I gave one last huge effort to pull the group back, and deliver my teammate into it. That done, i dropped off and cruised home to the line alone. I wasn't caught or passed by anyone else on the road, so i feel it was a good decision.

At the end of the day, i managed a 17th place finish of about 65 riders. Not bad, but i think i surely had a podium spot until the crash.

I suppose there's always next month!

To make matters worse, my HRM cut out after 1km of racing, and the crash managed to dislodge my cat eye backup computer too, so i had no info at all on the road, which didn't help the mental situation after the crash.

ruined my front tire, rear rim and frame all in one shot. great. I don't think i can afford this racing business, i've only had this bike for a week!

that _sucks_. Is it fixable/repairable? Still good job on working through the pain. very "Mathais Kessler" of you :)

Hopefully the rim is truable, i'll find out later today hopefully, my LBS didn't have the right tool to work on my rims unfortunately.

The Frame was dented by my knee on the top tube. it's not major, and likely won't affect anything, it just looks awful, and hurts because the bike was brand new.

I was hoping to ride to another bike shop about 45kms away today, but my left hand is pretty banged up, not sure i can hold onto the bars at the moment.

Ack, that's awful. I actually wrecked my bike last year with less than 150 miles on it...no serious damage (the worst was the rear derailluer having to be bent back into shape so it "will never shift as good as new") but it did hurt to have scrapes and dings on it so soon after getting it. People still give me a hard time because I jumped off the pavement, blood running down my face and legs and the first thing I said was "Is my bike okay?!"

Of course, your bike is a much more serious machine than my simple ride, so I hope it all comes out okay. Sorry to hear about it!

sorry to hear that robb. :( you going to be racing the CD from now on? ;)

roadbikemike says,

you going to post some pics of the bike?
