Out with Todd for a Monday morning ride. I wasn't feeling overly fresh after yesterday's effort, and Todd was hurting from a big run he did yesterday.
Decided to head over to Base Borden for some different scenery. It was the perfect day for riding, warm, sunny and not too windy.
We reminisced about some of the better rides we've done this summer. Looked ahead to the few remaining races and group rides for the year, and then we began planning how we'll stay active once the cycling season is over for the year.
Snowshoeing, Skate Skiing, and swimming seem to be the options we kept coming back to!

Down here (NJ) we ride all year round! The Sunday group I ride with switches to fixed gear bikes in early November and then we ride 30-50 miles on fixed gears on Sundays until the spring. Some of the guys here I know switch to cyclocross racing in the fall. Most of us have full winter gear to ride in. I have special winter shoes see pic at (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/Default.aspx?Main=Produ...) these will keep your feet warm down into the 20s.
As for me, I have xc skis and downhill skis, that is my true love in the winter. Last winter I took up alpine racing and even have some medals to show for it. We don't get enough snow here in NJ for regular xc skiing and there is no place to skate ski here.
Hey...congrats on beating my to the 5k miles mark!
I knew you'd pass me up and it was only a matter of time.
Where do find time to do all the miles?
Keep it up and you may crack 10k by the end of the year!!!

Dean: I will do some riding through the winter, and i have plans to race the cross season which begins next month. However, it's good to let the legs rest for some part of the season, so i don't mind doing some activities which will test other parts of my body while keeping my core fitness level high. Last winter I was sick for pretty much 4months, so when i began this season, it was virtually from scratch again, I want to enter next season in shape that's not far off from where I'm at now.
Alpine has always been my winter passion, however there's just not enough cardio in it, so this year I'll start Skate Skiing.
I also live on a lake, and am considering getting some studded tires for my MTN bike. I'll be able to really cover some miles that way this winter!
Gman: thanks man, you have been a wonderful carrot for me this season!
As for time, I am lucky in that I work for myself, from home. Granted, I would say my work/riding ratio is a lot lower than it should be for financial success, I am enjoying the time riding, far more than the extra money I could be making.
I don't think 10k miles is going to happen, 10k kms is a sure thing, i hope to reach that by the end of September. Once Sept is over, i will need to begin to refocus on work, so my riding time will surely take a beating.
Next year, 10k is my goal from the outset. That, and continued competitive racing :)
I'm so jealous that you get to work for yourself! No wonder you get to spend so much time to spend on the bike. I'm trying to fit all my training inbetween juggling two jobs, ahh!
Spending more time doing what you enjoy is definitely better than making a few extra bucks. 10k miles for next year is a great goal, I look forward to watching your progress!
i can't imagine having to work at two jobs and try to get in my riding, although I suspect finding a way wouldn't be so difficult. Ideally I'd ride to and from work anyways :)
I seriously applaud your drive and commitment towards the training you do!! You do far and above what i do on the bike IMO, keep it up, you're an inpiration to me!
