Thursday night ride with the boys.
Met up with Shawn and went out to the 7th of Oro and back before meeting Cliff, Larry & Darren downtown.
We set off into Innisfil doing my usual loop in the opposite direction. This means some great climbs at about the 3/4 mark of the ride.
Had a great ride, did all my climbing in 53x19 or smaller, and felt great. Unfortunately, there's something wrong with my bike. I'm not sure if it's a bent drop out, bent up rear derailleur or what, but i can't stand on the pedals with any real power without jumping the chain on the cassette :(
Shawn and Larry are both bike techs, and neither one could see anything overtly wrong, and we tried adjusting things but to no avail. I'm going to have to take it in to Shawn's shop sometime next week and try to figure out what's wrong with it.
Hopefully it's not expensive!

You didn't mention what kind of shifters the bike has (Campy or Shimano)? If your derailleur has more than 15,000 miles on it, it could have weak springs. I had a similar problem on my bike and the ergo shift lever needed to be replaced.
The other thing to check is the derailleur cable- try tightening it. Some frames will flex under power and that will also cause the ghost shifting.
You didn't mention if the bike jumps to a smaller cog or if the chain is just skipping on the same cog>? The latter problem is a worn out cassette and you'll only need a new cassette and chain.
You know with 9 and 10 sp. cassettes they wear out much faster!!
i've only got 2700kms on the bike, it's 2005 campy record stuff.
no reason for anything to be worn out, and it hasn't always been this way, so i really don't know what to say at this point.
shifts are fine, no problems there. It's not skipping and shifting into a different gear, it's just skipping on the same gear.
I'm sure the mechanic will diagnose it. Believe it or not, a 10 speed chain or cassette can wear out in 2,000 miles (~3200 km) especially if it wasn't cleaned/ lubed at regular enough intervals. It sometimes can happen if you like a particular cog - that one cog will wear faster than the others.
If it's not jumping to a smaller cog then it is not related to the ergo levers.
Glad to hear you ride campy- we're in the minority!
i fully clean and lube my chain every 400kms, and i never ride the same gear, I'm all over the map usually.
I hope it's something as simple as you describe, however with my luck, i'm assuming it's going to be worse.
campy is by far the better stuff for racing. Dura Ace is great for training tho!
I'll find out next week, i've got a 24hour MTN bike race this weekend :)
btw, I'm 30.
