Chuckles says,

I've cut the listing off at 3 days. If you see any problems with my calculation, please let me know.

From now on, changes to activities before May 18th will not effect the streak calculations. That means if you have forgotten to add a ride from more than a week ago, you are now out of luck. Sorry.

Each time I run the streak script, I will move the cut off date forward. You will always have at least 7 days to get your rides entered.

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

Are you going to be able to do this for running, too?

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Ahh.. I'm not sure how that is working out. There was the issue about injury that came up in the MeTa thread.. I don't run at all, so I've stayed out of the issue completely, and I've really no idea what's going on at this point.

Of course it is trivially easy to run the data at WeEndure, now that the cycling script is done, but MeFi runners are mostly at that other site.. I don't mind doing a script for running over there, but only as a last resort, so to speak :P So, maybe you could bring up the question MeTa (same thread even?!?!) and see if the runners and mathowie can figure something out. Then, if needed, I can chip in with a script.

dobbs says,

What do the asterisks mean?

Also, just to confirm... this started in May, right?

mikepop's avatar
mikepop says,

I'll guess that asterisks mean the streak is still in play

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Yep, basically the asterisk is a streak that is still in play.

Technically.. The date is attached when there is a gap in a rider's daily totals. The gap might still be filled in, and a streak resurrected, because I look for changes and additions for dates up to 7 days before the last update was processed.

For example, mikepop's streak that ended May 21st could potentially be ongoing, because May 18th is the current cutoff for additions/changes. Maybe I need another symbol for streaks that are in limbo like that..

And yes, May 1st was the first date I looked at.

spokenword says,

oh, my streak is totally not in play. A Memorial Day weekend up in Toronto without a bike pretty much end-dated my May streak. Which brings up the idea of whether or not it would behoove the script if we entered in an empty 0 mile day to indicate one that was not spent biking.

notsnot says,

As far as running streaks go, I've been recording my runs here rather than at runner+ because...well, I discovered how nice it is to run in silence about the same time that my Ipod decided to only intermittently record my data. So I've had to Google Map almost every run.

dobbs says,

Thanks for the clarification!

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

Thatlack of star on the update made me sit up and notice - apparently I typed in one of my rides after midnight, and forgot to change the date...Thanks!

dobbs's avatar
dobbs says,

Not sure I exactly follow what's going on with the script. I haven't missed a day yet this month and always enter data the same day or next day and yet I seem to be 4 or so days behind all the time.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

If you aren't entering your activities on the day you do them, you have to change the date. You can go back and edit old activities, if you have some that have been entered incorrectly, just look for the grey gear icon.

Also, if you didn't make it 6.2 miles on a particular day, your streak is broken.

Here are your daily totals as of last update, in miles:

Arrgh. Thanks, Chuckles.

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

BTW, Matt said he'd pony up for a prize for running, if you're willing to port your script over to the running data.

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

There's something about a post entitled "streakers" that has a heading, "group home", which makes my mind think of old guys runnin' naked through the old-folks' home. Ack.

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

Oh, and...Chuckles, thanks a lot for going back and re-processing all the data. As others have mentioned, it's the streak that has got me out there a couple days I'd have rather sat at home. Of course, once I got moving, those were some of my best rides.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

I'm thinking it is time for a Meta post:

There are 75 days left in the Cycling Streak Challenge. It might look like ~35 days is a commanding lead, but any streak falls apart in just 24 hours, and with the adjusted rules, more than 2/3rds of the competition period is ahead of us.

Any comments welcome.. I'd really like to see more people put in attempts at a solid streak.

hangashore's avatar
hangashore says,

Now that's a race! Cheers, Chuckles, for rejiggering the counting script. Seconding the idea of a MeTa post, with a pointer to the Bicycle Tutor post (and project) on the Blue yesterday (for those who want to get and keep their wheels spinning):

http://www.metafilter.com/72589/The-Bicycle-Tutor

There's a whole bunch of potential 100+ day streaks in the making, and a few more that could be 80-90 days.

And maybe someone is going to start a 75-day streak... today!

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

I guess this means I'm gonna have to take my bike with me when I go to Colorado for the wildflower season, just to keep up with you nutcases....

notsnot's avatar
notsnot says,

Oh, and...since no-one was really doing a streak on the running side, I let myself drop....or was someone doing it and not saying so?

spokenword says,

you might want to double check the script. I should've had a 8 day streak in play from 6/19 to 6/27 when this was run, though now it's 10 days as I just entered rides for 6/28 and 6/29.

I also should've had a 17 day streak from 5/29 - 6/14, which is my current long record.

I mean, no way in hell, am I going to be in the running for this, but for the sake of everyone's accurately counting everyone's records and all...

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Well, I can see there is a problem.. I can't spot what it is though.

Working on it..

So.. The problem was an inability to handle new members. Dumb! :P

I'll start a new thread on July 1st, based on the update, but for now I'm not going to change the lead post at the top.

If anybody notices any other problems, don't hesitate to let me know!

thanks for the quick resolution, Chuckles!

I should have mentioned that it is usually my fault.
