everichon says,

Thanks for the math, as always, Chuckles. I am not gonna win this one...too damn warm this year.

mikepop's avatar
mikepop says,

I skipped yesterday's ride because the roads were in such horrible conditions from the Mon/Tues storms (ice ruts everywhere, no clear travel paths) and all I was thinking about was how many points I was losing out on due to the 0 degree F weather! Fortunately the roads were much improved this morning.

But next week high temps in the mid-40s are predicted, so I don't know if I'll be racking up the points like I did in December.

lonefrontranger says,

well we're currently undergoing 55-60º temps, in prep for going back into the deep freeze tomorrow.

Chuckles, i demand a pony!!! the godsbedamned chinook was blowing today and I rode 30+ miles in it at the mercy of a bunch of fire-breathers (yea, my choice, mea culpa).

you gotta calc. for wind? it never dropped below 25mph during the ride, and was often gusting at 40+

there's an old Boulder cyclist's story (maybe urban legend, but I kinda doubt it) about Clark Sheehan getting knocked off his bike out on U.S. 36 by a METAL WATER TROUGH fercrissake (from a cow pasture, yes) when the chinooks were blowing one winter.

gotta love riding on the Front Range in January. When it's calm, it's ten degrees. When it's sixty, it means the Front Range Straight Line Hurricane™ is a-blowin. When this happens, and I am not making this up, I have ridden DOWN a steepish hill, in my small ring, maxed out at redline just because the freaking headwind was so strong.

PercussivePaul says,

Hi everyone
I am new at this, just posted info for my first ride of the season. Not below freezing though. I am a fairly casual rider but I think I manage to log a decent amount of miles so it will be interested to keep track here.

tribaby's avatar
tribaby says,

Yeah, it's been freakishly warm here, so no ice for me at least for the next week.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Well, one more participant. This hot spell is ruining the challenge.. Nice riding though.

I'm very very sorry about the lack of time based standings. I will get it done tomorrow, I swear!

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Finally got the time script finished. Sorry about the delay!

JeffL's avatar
JeffL says,

Are we still going to keep track of miles (as well as time)?

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

I wasn't planning on doing distance totals.. I feel like it defeats the point of varying the challenge.

fijiwriter's avatar
fijiwriter says,

Drat! Behind mathowie...oh, the anxiety!

skynxnex says,

We're finally getting some sub-freezing temps! And tomorrow it should be possible to bike without having to deal with the snow/ice that came down yesterday. So I might finally get some points.

Oh, I had a vague idea about including people without freezing temps: if temp in C is above 0, do miles*(1/(degC+2)) or something of that nature. :) Thanks again for doing this, even though I haven't been riding to much this month. Maybe the second half.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Hmm, the formula could be: distance * exp(-T). It grows a little too fast though. You could take the root of T, or something, but it wouldn't look elegant.

Anyway, no changes for this month! Bad enough that lonefrontranger had to be special and use all these spaces and non-ascii characters in his temperatures :)

Did I mention how good I feel about third?

lonefrontranger says,

"lonefrontranger had to be special and use all these spaces and non-ascii characters in his temperatures"

oh man, sorry - I'll cut it out! it's just too easy to do this being a macuser. I do document control stuff at a chemical plant, which involves a lot of technical writing so I have a nerdly habit of being super-pedantic about spaces and characters and stuff.

er, and that would be HER temperatures, sir. I is a girl.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Boyzone strikes again :(
(and, my internet stalker side says awesome pictures! That is some desolate looking terrain, I don't think I'd want to be out there in 5-15F type temps)

No point cutting it out now, the modification was easy enough. Human entered text can vary in really bizzare ways though, and it can get really hard to process. So, everybody should please attempt to restrict their creativity in that particular area :)

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

I wonder how I'm doing in the standings today..

1) lonefrontranger -823.39
2) Chuckles -790.21
3) mikepop -748.85
4) hydrophonic -349.57
5) isopraxis -272.10
6) GalaxieFiveHundred -180.21
7) everichon -90.52

-12C outside, 33 points back.. But, it's 3am.. Will be my only chance to taste the lead though. Ya, I'm going for it!

Chuckles says,

Done, and done!
(and what's with Tim Horton's having no donuts?)

Don't worry, I'll still run the week three update tomorrow night as planned, and I'm 99% sure I will have been bumped by then :)

PercussivePaul says,

I would just like to say that it was -1 C on my ride this morning - first time below freezing in weeks. On the board, yes!!

mikepop's avatar
mikepop says,

Good thing I took that ride last night for the sole reason of boosting my standings!

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

I do still have to go to the post office this evening, and it is -8C. Maybe I'll get one legitimate placing in after all :)

sequential's avatar
sequential says,

Wish I had my bike more than one day a week.

ErWenn says,

I just noticed this challenge. I had a couple barely sub-freezing rides back in the beginning of December right after I signed up here but just before winter break. So I went back and added the notes with the temperatures deduced from wunderground.com and my personal calendar. Is this okay, and will it show up on the next standings?

Not that I'm going to win, of course. I only bike a few miles a day for commuting, and unless we get a repeat of yesterday's temperature of -15C, it's unlikely to be much lower than -5C on most days.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Week 3 update is online.

Back in August somebody warned me about online challenges - people cache their miles, the guy said, to throw off the competition. Pshaw, I said, Mefites wouldn't do that! :)

Sorry ErWenn, just scoring for January. I can run the beta (aka December) totals again though, if you want to see the numbers.
(well, let me see if the script will work.. Nope, it will need tweaking to do old totals like that.. Sorry..)

sequential's avatar
sequential says,

Hard to cache miles when you don't know the challenge exists. :-)

lonefrontranger says,

yea well you guys are just lucky we picked the coldest weekend of January to go ski instead of riding.

-5F on the way to work this AM tho. Doesn't get cold in Boulder quite like it does in Canada, but neg 20s Celsius is pretty good.

ErWenn says,

That's alright. I got a few miles in today. At 20F, you think it'd be difficult to overdress, but I managed to pull it off. Next time I check the actual temperature before getting suited up instead of just listening to the guy who says "it's frickin' cold out there!"

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

It isn't hard at all to overdress, especially if you are wearing anything waterproof.

I'm on hooded sweatshirt on top of t-shirt down to about 5C. Add a long sleeve shirt and light gloves down to zero (possibly with hood up). Add a second long sleeve shirt, and boots down to about -5C. Add long underwear and mittens instead of light gloves down to -12C.

I'm pretty surprised at some of those details, actually. I hear people talking about things related to clothing, but without actually trying it, it doesn't mean very much.

ErWenn says,

I go for coverage before warmth, trying to cut down on the throbbing-ear-and-stinging-nose problem. I wear a light ski mask at under 40F (~4C) and the goggles go on right around freezing. The mask, the hat, the gloves, and coat are all black, so my friends call it my ninja outfit. I have a particularly warm coat, so I generally don't start layering until it gets down to around 20F (~ -7C), though I just got a scarf and that's makes a big deal, so I had just the coat on today at 10F (~ -12C) without much problem. If it gets any colder, I'll have to pull out the rainslicker that goes over my pants.

All the thought that goes into getting dressed for biking makes it just interesting enough to make sure I keep doing it.

Considering that I grew up in Las Vegas, spent 9 years in Phoenix, and only moved to the midwest 3 years ago, I think I'm doing pretty well. While I still prefer heat to warmth in most circumstances, 115F (~46C) is hot no matter how you dress.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

We are up to 12 scores, not too bad. Great weather for me this week, but not likely for the next few days.

I was sure lonefrontranger had it well in hand, but she has been absent for a few days ('caching' some commutes? :P), so everything is getting very close at the top. The weatherman, and how often sequential can get his bike, will probably tell the tail.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Argh!!!

At least we have something to aim for :)

sequential's avatar
sequential says,

Try running the stats again. The site was down all day for me, so my ride from Saturday wasn't included in the last update.

For what it's worth, the weather isn't going to cooperate with this challenge until the end of the month. I am bringing my bike on the road with me, but it's gonna snow tomorrow, will barely be below freezing Monday, won't be below freezing Tuesday, and I'll be lucky to put in another -100 points between Wednesday and Thursday.

sequential's avatar
sequential says,

Wow, that was quick. :-)

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

With the recent absence of lonefrontranger, I don't think anybody is going to come close to sequential. Certainly not me, I'll be out of town the rest of the week (and we don't have the weather for it anyway)..

sequential's avatar
sequential says,

It's certainly not unpossible. I have only logged four rides this month. One of the rides was worth less than 100 points. In other words anyone in the next three spots can easily eclipse my point total with one ride and cooperating temperatures.

mikepop's avatar
mikepop says,

It's a balmy 42 in Maine unfortunately

lonefrontranger says,

eh, I don't have intertubes at the house, so it's difficult to play, especially when work is taxing like it has been this week.

I had to log everything for the past, like, week or so today when I had a breather.

That said, I don't think anyone is going to catch up with sequential. I'll settle for being the lone old woman in the top 5 (I think).

sequential's avatar
sequential says,

Awww. Now I feel guilty.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Here's the top 5 tonight:
1) sequential -2458.64
2) Chuckles -1792.06
3) lonefrontranger -1710.41
4) mikepop -1645.71
5) hydrophonic -475.53

(not second yet, lady!)

mikepop's avatar
mikepop says,

It never dropped below freezing last night, and it was 40 degrees on my way *in* this morning. At least it looks like it will be tough for me to lose 4th.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

I don't know where hangashore has been, but it is crazy cold in Alberta right now.. It has turned cold here too, but I'm nowhere near a bicycle :)

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

Final scores are up.

Congratulations to sequential on the deepest freezing, and lonefrontranger for 32 hours in the saddle, in January.

hydrophonic's avatar
hydrophonic says,

And congrats to isopraxis for getting out there in -30C!

mikepop's avatar
mikepop says,

Congrats to all, and thanks to Chuckles for all the number crunching!

Sequential & Lonefrontranger, let me know what stickers you want for your wins:

http://bike.bedope.com/

lonefrontranger says,

Chuckles, thanks for doing this!

Congrats sequential, you're a hard dude. I tip my wooly hat to you.

the Front Range had a run of really warm (and ungodly windy) weather mid-January that pretty much blew my chances for scoring mad points, and annoyed the crap out of me to boot. Only 32 hours, damn. Midseason, I do that in like, ten days.

holy moses isopraxis, -30º is freakin cold no matter how you slice it!

mikepop, thanx for the stickerage, that's wicked good stuff. I'll email ya.

hangashore's avatar
hangashore says,

"I don't know where hangashore has been"

I'm an absolute wimp when the roads get icy (ice is for hockey!), so I'm totally in jealous awe of what you've all got going here. Hoping to be back at it in late March or early April, maybe with a new bike from my tax return money.

Chuckles's avatar
Chuckles says,

I think I'm going to do a web page: My Well Used Bike. You know, with pictures of two broken seatposts (one that was seized and had to be sawed out), one stolen seat+post, cracked dropout, broken axles, broken luggage rack, broken handlebar, three rear wheels, and also three front wheels (one stolen)..

New bike.. Sheesh :)
(good to hear from you though!)

isopraxis says,

-30 isn't that bad if you keep moving and keep your face covered. I kept riding all winter, but fell off the wagon of recordkeeping due to the mega-blahs. Since I changed bike computers last october, my odo says I've logged 850 km since then: Not a lot of distance, but considering the crap weather over the winter months here, I feel like I've lived up to the challenge.

I'm going to try to get back up on entering times and distances here. Its good to see my mefi compatriots pedaling along.
Keep it up peeps!

isopraxis says,

Oh, and my hints for not overdressing when it is below -20C:
A good wicking layer right at the bottom with a medium weight middle layer (breathable is better, synthetic better than cotton.) Sometimes I would wear an old-fashioned thermal long-sleeved top under a t-shirt, but it would often be pretty damp by the time I arrived at work. Below -25C I would wear a synthetic stretchy hoodie under my windstopper shell, but sometimes this was even too much. I also have windstopper tights, ski goggles and snowboard style balaclava, lobster mittens and helmet (of course). Oh - and a pair of exustar winter cycling boots w/ my crank brothers cleats on the bottom.

Less than -15C was usually just windstopper tights, mittens, goggles, balaclava, and just a t-shirt under my windstopper shell.

Most of my gear comes from Mountain Equipment Co-op - their stuff is awesome and usually a good price too. Not affiliated - just a big fan of MEC stuff.

mec.ca for those interested.

And now for some spring.
