Yikes, only 11 people..
Baby, it's cold outside!
Where am I? Make it a dozen.
OK, I finally bought some stuff to wear so I can ride in cold weather. Could this be my month at last?
I'm late again logging my hours.
And fijiwriter makes the big 21 position jump, into 12th place, even though there are only 18 participants.
I am starting to weigh whether or not I want to ride on icy and snowy days, with studded tires. On the one hand, it sounds fun. On the other hand, people where I live don't know how to drive in such conditions, so I would be deeply paranoid about randomly carroming cars.
I used to do it in MKE with no studs, in real snow...I dunno.
Ya.. Recreational winter riding is kind of contradictory (though it is fun to screw around in deep snow once in a while). Cycling is the only way I get anywhere though. And, downtown, it is still a superior mode of transportation, even with all the weather related complications.
haHa! I knew there was a reason I bought raingear!
mathowie is on the move!
And, my left knee was still hurting this afternoon.. 185lb loads only over shorter distances from now on :P (It really gives you a new perspective on inertia. )
I'm gunning for migurski!
21 riders now, not too bad for November.
As I suggested earlier, I'm thinking it would be really fun to do a weather related challenge in January, including MetaTalk announcement. Something like this:
(in metric)
score = sum over all rides {distance of ride * -(local daily high temperature)}
Claiming km's on warm days will hurt your score! :)
If anyone can think of a more interesting formula for calculating a weather weighted score, or if you just think the temperature weighting is too strong, I'd love to hammer out an improvement
And, keeping track of time that month is no problem, it will give those poor saps in the warm climates something to think about while the real work is being done :)
If there are only going to be a couple of people riding, it will be a little pointless, of course.. So, feedback please.
I plan to be riding in January, so I'm in.
So you would calculate your score daily, then total up those scores at the end of the month?
I am very much "in".
Oh, ya.. I should have included what users should do :)
If riders put the daily high for their area as the first line of the comment on each activity, I'll script the calculating.
Like:
25F
or
-1C
Should we put the daily high, or roughly the temperature when we took the ride? I assume everyone checks the temp close to ride time to figure out what to wear.
Is there a canonical source? Or can I use that AM's newspaper HI-LO?
I've never ridden in November before but god am I loving my new Gore windstopper jacket. Most of my rides have been in the 30-40F range and I'm going to try and ride all through winter this year.
I have some kind of Adidas gore-like jacket, and it is what makes doing cold-wet-windy riding do-able for me.
I'm glad I'm not doing this as competition, else I'd be miffed I live in Florida.
I'd like to replace "Claiming km's on warm days will hurt your score!" with "claiming km's on cold days will improve your score!"
(since all my cycling is done indoors.)
Dang! Mathowie sneaked right past me.
