Working out while on vacation

Posted 6 months ago by Garrison

So I'm leaving for NYC next week on a vacation visiting a long time friend.

Are there any tips you guys/gals have on not completely blowing my training. I'll be gone for 8 days total and I've read that after two weeks of no training you are pretty much back to square one. Some I'm concerned that 1 week could be a huge setback...

What kind of training do you normally do? Weight training? Aerobic exercise? I found that New York provides a lot of opportunity for walking, so you can at least get some of that in. Will you be close to Central Park at all? Plenty of room to run there!

But basically, it can be difficult to exercise while on vacation. I'm not sure what the solution is. Looking back, I wish I was running wen we were in London last year -- it would have been a great way to see more of the city!

Well up to this point I've been exclusively running. However after a doctor appointment today I'm supposed to cut back on high impact exercise for a few weeks due to an inflamed big toe joint. I guess I might just have to shoot for the vast amount of walking I expect to do and maybe the friends I'll be staying with might have a pool or workout room with an exercise bike.

And I'll have to be more dedicated to the push-up/sit-up workouts too.

I like the idea of a central park run, during the day never the night, so maybe towards the end of my trip the toe might feel better for a light jog...

Well I had a Doctor apt on Friday and sounds like I have some inflamed tendons or ligaments in my foot between big toe and foot. He gave me some anti-inflammatory medicine and wants me to lay off some heavy impact activity so I think the vacation with walking only will be just what the doctor ordered.

Walking is a great way to really see a new city. I spend alot of time in London, and one of my favorite activities is to walk out of the hotel and just pick a direction and start walking. I usually do it after work, walk for about 20-30 minutes until I find a pub that looks like it's worth trying, then go in and have a dinner and a pint or two. It's a great way to meet people too and get some of the local flavor. I don't know how well this would work in NYC though, I've never been there.

Enjoy your vacation, hope your foot gets better soon.

cheers,

Well I'm back from the vacation and only roughly 1 pound heavier than when I left, so I'll consider that a victory. I was putting on around 5-8 miles a day of walking so at least I was burning some extra calories but no aerobic activity of course.

My right foot seems to be improving but sadly while I was hunting down a great burger place my friend heard about in New Haven, CT (Luis's Lunch) I sprained my ankle pretty bad on a uneven sidewalk. I guess I'm spoiled currently living on the west coast and taking level even sidewalks for granted.

I visited the doctor today four days after I injured it and it is still swollen and all sorts of pretty colors. Sounds like running is off limits for at least 2 weeks most likely 4. What a sad set back as I was really hitting the running hard with lots of motivation. But there is a lesson to be learned.

While visiting in an unfamiliar place don't take the walking/running/biking surface for granted, and keep your eyes open.
