Whoa! Am I trying to track too much stuff here?

Posted 6 months ago by soapdish

Earlier this year I decided to start to try to get back into some shape other than "round" or "pear" or "blob". The university I work at was offering a kayaking eskimo roll class so I decided to sign up because a) I thought it would be a good re-introduction to working out and b) a kayak would look mega-cool on top of my Honda Element. Well, the kayak would still look cool but holy cow the eskimo roll class took a lot out of me, showing me my age and lack of general fitness and flexibility.

I'm a regular reader of JD's "Get Rich Slowly" blog and saw his post for WeEndure and decided to sign up and post what I've done. Now, there's no "kayaking" activity so I chose "swimming" and made some guess as to what the equivalent workout would be. I also am counting walking the dog, since walking is really just running very slowly. I was making the assumption that we could/would/should track all of our "workouts" here. I don't want to make it look like I'm padding my numbers by including activities that shouldn't be included. Opinions?

I think the idea here is to try to stay consistent with whatever activity you're doing, even if doesn't fit exactly into one category.

The important thing is time. How long are you spending doing the activity, and are you doing it frequently? As time goes on, you'll be able to determine if you're improving or not.

I would just keep listing your kayaking how you already are and make an annotation on the side describing what you did and how you felt during and after (for future reference and proof of improvement).

My impression of this site is that its not necessarily for competition, although it could be useful in that way, but rather for the involvement of other people in your exercise activities.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as you're tracking your activities in a way that means something to you, then I'd count it a success.

I like the social part of things. It's another useful way of motivating myself to get out the door, and hopefully help others do the same. But I'm not keeping score or trying to one-up anyone, and I'd guess most of the people feel the same.

It would be nice if there was a way to track exercises other than run/bike/swim though.

The kayak eskimo roll class sounds like alot of fun!

I wish there were some way to track weight training, but maybe that doesn't work...
